The HDMI - Is it the Best Connection Option For Your HDTV and Blu-Ray Player?

The HDMI - Is it the Best Connection Option For Your HDTV and Blu-Ray Player?

Hdmi

With the popularity of the HDTV, gone are the days when a TV was just used for broadcasting Television and simply connecting your cable box was all you needed to do. All kinds of different gadgets are now being connected to your Television set. Your TV screen provides various functions in your home entertainment as it is used for gaming, watching movies, photos, and it can even be used as a computer monitor.

In order to get the optimal performance out of your HDTV, it usually comes down to how it is connected. Some people become frustrated when dealing with the endless multi-colors rows of inputs and outputs. It can be a daunting task if you do not know which connection to use; not only on your HDTV, but also on the many devices you are connecting such as DVRs, Blu-ray players, cable boxes, sound receivers, and gaming systems. All provide you with many options to use for connecting to your HDTV and make no mistake about it, how your HDTV is connected does make a difference in both image and sound quality.

What ways can you connect?

There are usually 5 ways to connect your HDTV to other devices: HDMI, DVI, Component, S-video and Composite. Some HDTVs may not have all of these connections, however, most newer ones will at least come with HDMI, DVI, and component. So, what exactly are these connections?

HDMI - or High Definition Multimedia Interface is the standard for high definition home theater. It gives you uncompressed 1080p high definition video and up to 7.1 channels of surround sound in one cable.

DVI - Digital Visual Interface was the best option with older HDTVs. It can give you 1080p high definition video, but you will have to use a separate cable for audio.

Component - Component Video splits video signal into three separate signals, two for color, and one for brightness. Highest resolution it can achieve is 720p and 1080i.

S-video - S-Video splits the video signal into two parts, one for color, and one for brightness.

Composite or RCA - Composite has color and brightness delivered over one cable.

Which one is best?

The easy answer to this question is the HDMI cable. With the ease of connecting just one cable you get the best quality in image and sound. HDMI cables have up to 5 Gbps of bandwidth, which is more than enough to carry uncompressed high definition video images and up to 8 channels of 24-bit high definition audio. This limits any affect on video or audio quality, since there is no converting of signals (digital to analog) or any compressed signals. And blu-ray players are all about achieving the highest quality of image and sound possible.

There are four main versions of HDMI that most hardware will have. They are: 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3. All versions of HDMI has the capacity to carry HD video up to 1080p.

1.0 - First version of HDMI. Will decode most audio codecs found in DVDs and digital TV signals, as well as Dolby Digital and DTS.

1.1 - This version allowed for 5.1 channels audio, eliminating the need for 6 separate audio RCA cables.

1.2/1.2a - Allows for the use of Super Audio CD (SACD).

1.3/1.3a/1.3b - This version allows for the transmitting of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Audio, which are used with Blu-ray players. This version also increases the bandwidth to 10 Gbps.

The drawback to the HDMI cable is the cost. HDMI cables can run anywhere from to 0. Some argue there is no difference in HDMI cables, no matter what the cost. DVI may be another option for you, with this cable you should be able to get the best high definition, 1080p. However, other cables will be needed for audio. Your best option if purchasing a HDMI cable, is to find a modestly price HDMI cable and work your way up until you find the one that suits you best.

RCA Cables

RCA Cables

Hdmi

RCA cables, also known as the RCA connectors had got its name RCA from Radio Corporation of America which was the first company to introduce these cables. RCA cables have been used right from the 1940s and still get better and more efficient too. It firstly came into existence to replace audio device connector cables. Then later it was further used to connect mono graph players to an output device. The plug to which these cable are connected are known as the 'phono plugs'.

The RCA cables consist of 3 plugs each of different colors to show differentiation. Usually it is yellow, white and red. Each one is for different purposes. One is for the video output and the other two are for left and right speakers for stereo or otherwise just one of them is enough for mono. The plug with a protruding end is called the male plug. And there is a ring of metal or copper or some sturdy element so that there is not much of shakes and disturbances to the plugs connection.

Most of the DVD players, MP3 players and related devices use these cables only. PlayStation and other gaming devices also use RCA cables.

There is one common disadvantage in RCA connector cables. Each device you add on to your output, more of the RCA cables are needed. And all of them consist of three wires and there is definitely a chance for messy appearance in the concerned place. All the wires get entangled and it becomes very confusing to straighten them out.

How to Buy the Perfect LCD TV in 5 Simple Steps!

How to Buy the Perfect LCD TV in 5 Simple Steps!

Hdmi

So you're looking to buy a new LCD TV but want to be certain that you spend your hard earned cash on a set that really is exactly what you want and need? Well think of this as your simple step by step guide to ensuring a perfectly matched LCD TV for you. Whether you're looking for a new TV for your lounge, a portable for your bedroom or even a set to connect to your favourite game console, this guide will help you make the right choice.

1) The screen size is crucial!

Determining the right screen size for your requirements is a crucial decision that needs to be made right at the beginning. Until now, LCD TVs have been more common in smaller sizes, normally no bigger than 27 inches, but with the huge leaps forward in viewing technology, this is no longer the case. A larger screen does not necessarily means a poorer quality image, but it is important to match the size of the screen to the size of the room you intend it for. For example, a huge 40 inch LCD screen in a small bedroom would not only look out of proportion and take up a lot of room, but it would mean the user sitting so close to the screen that the images would look unclear and difficult to watch. To get the best experience out of your investment, remember what your parents used to tell you about sitting too close to the TV. Your mother was probably thinking about your health, but in this case we're thinking about your viewing pleasure. For the optimal viewing experience, you need to maintain the right distance between your viewing area and your television screen. So make a sensible choice when deciding the screen size you want and consider your room size.

2) But what about the Tuners?

Most current flat-panel displays include a tuner for the standard analog broadcast and cable-TV reception and also one for broadcast HDTV. However a few don't come with any tuner at all. These are more uncommon now but it is always worth considering which tuners your potential purchase has. Many sets also have built-in tuners for digital cable TV. Although such tuners have a standard for handling scrambled premium channels (for example, HBO), many sets do not support it, so be sure you know exactly what you are getting. If you want that capability, make sure the set you buy has a CableCard slot.

3) Do I need HDMI? Yes you do!

You may find that there are some great deals floating around for sets that do not have a HDMI input. You may even get a pushy sales rep telling you that it's not a requirement for you, but don't listen. If at all possible, you should certainly get an LCD TV that has a HDMI input. This will ensure your new TV is compatibility with HDTV sources like HD digital cable boxes, HD satellite, and Blu-ray and HD DVD players. High Definition is the way forward and all the major manufacturers are including this feature in their new models.

4) The remote is your best friend!

It's really useful and quite important to get to know the remote control before splashing out your cash. A good remote can be your best friend, but a bad remote can just as easily be your worst enemy. Just look at the main features such as the layout, the feel quality and the size. Make sure the buttons are large enough to find easily and comfortably. Make sure any text or signs printed on the remote are readable and make sure the size suits you. There's no point having an extremely small remote if it makes it difficult to find the buttons you want!

5) Get The Demonstration.

Like most of us, you probably hate pushy sales people and opt to skip the demonstration in store. Don't! Instead, ask them to demonstrate the features you will tend to use most, such as setting the timer or programme guide, switching to the DVD player or using the inbuilt tuner. You'll not only get a first hand demo of how to work your LCD TV but you'll also see how difficult or easy it is to use the features.

So there you have it, our 5 simple steps to buying the perfect LCD TV to suit your needs, your home and your pocket! Just remember each of the above points when your browsing the new ranges and you're sure to find a model that'll keep you happy for years to come. Fiber Optic Cable Types: Simplex Vs Duplex - Singlemode Vs Multimode

Fiber Optic Cable Types: Simplex Vs Duplex - Singlemode Vs Multimode

Hdmi

When purchasing either a fiber optic HDMI extender or VGA extender, it is important to understand the different varieties of core characteristics that are available within the cabling itself. Each of these different characteristics will have different effects on your ability to transmit information reliably, and these different characteristics also affect how the extender or VGA extender you are looking at will cost. Let's take a look at the most common fiber optics cores used in the industry today.

Simplex

Simplex fiber optic cables consist of just one optic fiber. Their purpose is in one-way signal transfer applications. Analog to digital data readouts, interstate highway sensor relays, and automated speed and boundary sensors (for sports applications) are all great uses of Simplex fiber optic cable. This form of fiber cable can be cheaper than Duplex cables, because less material is involved. Simplex cable is compatible with any HDMI extender.

Duplex

Duplex cable is simply two optic fibers structured in a zipcord arrangement. Zipcord style means the cables run next to each other. Multimode and Singlemode duplex fiber alike are used for two-way data transfers. Larger workstations, switches, servers, and major networking hardware tends to require duplex fiber optic cable. Duplex cables can be more expensive than Simplex cables, and are compatible with any extender.

Singlemode Fiber Optic Cable

Singlemode fiber has a smaller core and just one path for light to travel down. Since there is only one wavelength of light moving through the core, single mode light aligns at the center of the optic core rather than bouncing about the interior of the core, which is the technology that enables Multimode cable to carry multiple light signals. Singlemode cables might be used in conjunction with a long range extender, or perhaps a few extenders, to move fiber optic signal over multiple miles. Singlemode fiber tends to have a glass core at 9-micron, and is compatible with either a one-way or two-way extender or VGA extender.

Dualmode Fiber Optic Cable

Dualmode fiber is a large diameter fiber core. Due to its relatively large size, multiple channels of light can be transmitted, allowing multiple bandwidths and signals to be transmitted simultaneously. Dualmode works great for most fiber applications. It works especially well in alarm systems, audio/video systems and production, desktops and laptops, and display systems. Dualmode fiber cable is both HDMI extender and VGA extender compatible.

Cable Thicknesses

Optic fire cable thickness can change depending on if your application calls for an HDMI extender, VGA extender, or both. The average HDMI extender will typically be used in conjunction with a 50 micron cable as opposed to a 62.5 micro cable. The reason an HDMI extender is used with 50 micron cable is because it has three times the bandwidth as compared to a 62.5 micron cable. Thus since an HDMI extender is typically used with two-way HDMI communications, you will rarely see an HDMI extender in use with a 62.5 micron cable.

Swype Keyboard

Swype Keyboard

An alternative to the Android virtual keyboard, the Swype virtual keyboard allows you to input text by swiping the finger with one continuous finger or stylus motion across the screen keyboard. Based on testing, speed and accuracy are equal to or better than the traditional keyboard-tapping method. You can activate the Swype keyboard by pressing and holding in a text field, wait for popup to appear, click Input Method, and then select Swype.

In the image to the right, the word "quick" was generated from tracing the path shown above in a fraction of a second, by roughly aiming to pass through the letters of the word. A key advantage to Swype is that there is no need to be very accurate, enabling very rapid text entry.

AT&T 4G Network

This phone runs on AT&T's dual-band 850/1900 MHz 4G network (UMTS/HSDPA/HSPA+), and with HSPA+ you'll experience mobile data speeds up to 4x faster than ordinary mobile broadband--up to approximately 6 Mbps (download). AT&T has deployed HSPA+ to virtually 100 percent of its mobile broadband network, which enables 4G speeds when combined with enhanced backhaul (via Ethernet or fiber).

Backhaul is one of the major pieces of a telecommunications network. Think of it as the limbs connecting AT&T's cell towers with AT&T's backbone network that provides access to the Internet.

Coming later in 2011, AT&T will deliver a second layer of 4G network called LTE (Long Term Evolution) that is even faster than HSPA+ speeds.

In areas where either AT&T's 3G or 4G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, which offers availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways.

Note: AT&T's 4G mobile broadband coverage is not available in all areas. 4G speeds delivered by HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul; availability increasing with ongoing backhaul deployment.
